Esmeralda Kosmatopoulos 3rd Avenue Window Installation at Bloomingdale's
Exhibition: March 4, 2016-March 27, 2016
Opening Reception: March 4, 2016
gallery nine 5 is proud to present a collaborative exhibition with Bloomingdales featuring the work of multi media artist, Esmeralda Kosmatopoulos. New York based artist, Kosmatopoulos artworks investigate the construction of identity, through language and communication in the digital age. Kosmatopoulos plays with symbols and the visual elements associated with the cold universe of electronics and injects features related to human emotion, anthropomorphizing technology.
Included along 3rd avenue at the Bloomingdales flagship store is Coup de Foudre an installation featuring a large neon sign which reads "Emotional Supply" hinting to the new emotional relationship we have created with our communication devices. Within the windows endless cords are encompassing the mannequins alluding to how technology has taken an all-new meaning, as machines play a greater role in our day-to-day lives; progressively becoming an extension of our own identity.
Talk to Sisyphus animates the absurdity of a new ritual, the endless search to power our phones. Kosmatopoulos playfully illustrates their life cycle, with a sea of battery symbols powering up and down.
The works presented create a tension that comes to question the internal and external connection between human and the new technologies we have created.
