Accent Colours and the 60:30:10 Rule
When decorating a room many designers choose to follow the 60:30:10 rule when it comes to the distribution of colours in the space. The good news is that it’s really easy for you to do this in your own home too, without professional help.
This classic designer trick states that your main colour should be 60%, your secondary colour should be 30% and your accent colour 10%.
Let’s suppose you were decorating a living room. The walls are a major feature so they’re part of your main 60% colour. Your secondary 30% colour can be things like curtains, rugs, painted furniture and maybe even an accent wall. Then, use your 10% colour to add a pop of vibrancy to your soft furnishings, artworks, and ornaments.
Create Space
To create the illusion of spaciousness, even in smaller rooms, choose a bright and light colour for the walls. For many people white is simply too stark, if you feel the same choose an off-white shade instead. Then add large mirrors to reflect any natural light coming in and to help create the feeling of a large room.
If you have large windows, consider dressing them in a billowy and airy fabric like muslin.
Bring the Outdoors In
Create a luscious and luxurious space by adding leafy green plants to your room. Not only are plants beautiful but they clean the air we breathe naturally. As an added bonus, most potted plants are generally inexpensive and add instant texture and depth to your spaces.
Not a fan of cleaning up dead leaves? No problems, opt for choices that drop minimal amounts such as the Maidenhair fern.
